PRODUCT GLOSSARY
ECF- Elemental Chlorine Free: When chlorine is used to bleach paper, the process can also result in the formation of harmful chemicals such as dioxins and furans, which are known to cause cancer in humans
Eco Logo or ECP Environmental Choice Program: Environmental Choice Program was established by Environment Canada in 1988 with over 300 categories of products to help consumers identify services/products which are less harmful to the environment.
FSC- Forest Stewardship Council: FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not for profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. Products carrying the FSC label are independently certified to assure consumers that they come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.
Green Seal: Green Seal provides science-based environmental certification standards that are credible, transparent, and essential in an increasingly educated and competitive marketplace.
PCF- Process Chlorine Free: Recycled papers are typically "processed-chlorine-free" (PCF), which means that no chlorine or chlorine derivatives were used in the recycling process, but that papers which were originally bleached with chlorine or chlorine derivatives may have been used as feedstock. (Papers that were originally bleached with chlorine or chlorine derivatives retain some of the chemicals in their fibers.) Some paper recycling processes, such as those that produce white printing and writing papers, still use chlorine or chlorine derivatives to bleach the paper whiter. Recycled paper that is produced with chlorine or chlorine derivatives, is not PCF.
PEFC- Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes: The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests
Recycled: Recycling involves processing used materials into new products in order to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energy usage, reduce air (from incineration) and water (from land filling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production.
SFI – Sustainable Forestry Initiative: The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program is based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist.
SFI program participants practice sustainable forestry on all the lands they manage. They also influence millions of additional acres through the training of loggers and foresters in best management practices and landowner outreach programs.
This unique commitment to sustainable forestry recognizes that all forest landowners, not just SFI program participants, play a critical role in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our forests.
TCF- Totally Chlorine Free: The TCF emblem is the only certification mark in the world that clearly identifies:
No chlorine or chlorine compounds were used in the papermaking process.
All virgin components need to be certified as total chlorine free and require a chain of custody for all fiber.
Wind Energy: Wind is quick to install and produces no air pollution or greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
